I had an interesting discussion with a friend who left academia for oil and gas company recently. He left cause of poor salary, he also made me understand that becoming a professor takes a long time and could be uncertain till retirement.

In term of personal benefit, the salary is increased and uncertainty reduced as you have been written about your friend. But in long term, the transition is beneficial to both because the complexity of industrial problem is increasing day by day and required lot of knowledge to solve them. In the same way academician also get first hand information of industrial problem.
