probably due to osmosis process, I have one question- why you used only distilled water, also try with higher and lower contraction of water. and two different leaves which having thick surface and soft surface.
the method used for the incubation of purified water, as different salt content in the water affects the other osmotic processes.

that is bind with osmosis process. When you immerse leaves in the distilled water from them of ions and water begins outflow.
