I am looking for a brief and general explanation of the processes brought about by a metal Cation Yn-1 to create Oxygen vacancies when it is incorporated in the crystal structure of a metal oxide having a cation with an oxidation state more electropositive (XnO). For instance, the Cu+2 doping of TiO2 (where there is Ti+4) is a system where Oxygen vacancies are created.
