Reducing stigma around mental health will help the work place colleagues and reporting managers to have a better understanding about the mental illness. If someone is allowed to take sick leave for having fever or a broken leg, why not give a sick leave for having depression? if a community is open to understand a mental illness, and use empathy rather than criticizing or de-humanizing, it can foster overall mental wellbeing. If stigma is not demonstrated in the workplace, it is more likely that people will seek help, rather than hiding their mental struggle, and it can also help people motivate to engage in their work. De-stigmatization can promote early interventions without fear of getting labeled. Since professional development is a trend in many organizations, why not have trainings to reduce stigma or why not have a therapist in the work place? Isn't it better to display an emotion in a healthy way rather than project it in an unhealthy way? Leaders can become more aware of mental health so it can change their perception about mental health/illnesses. This can enhance staff motivation for a better production as well it can reduce legal consequences face by organizations. There are some companies and some countries that terminate a staff if one has a mental disorder such as depression or anxiety. People are allowed to take medication for diabetes, but if they are taking a psychiatric drug, its a taboo in some companies in some countries. Leadership begins within and from the person who is supposed to be the leader. So, why not start it? I hope this answer helps.
