Biogas generation is regarded as one of the most technically matured, economically viable bioenergy generation systems (gasification, combustion etc.). Also, there's no constraint in biogas feedstock availability and govt. support programmes. Despite this, the biogas programme in India is still a failure. Why has biogas failed to emerge as a strong competitor to firewood and LPG in rural India (though there are demerits e.g. lack of supply, rising cost with firewood and LPG)? What could be the reasons and how can they be overcome?
What is the use of the digestate?
Are there cultural barriers to the use of organic matter for nutrients derived from different types of waste materials?
in general in India and particularly in Assam (an Indian state), digestate is being used as an organic fertilizer in crop fields by rural farmers. However its efficacy yet to be tested in detail (prolong storage of digestate may result in loss of nutrient through evaporation and seepage into ground water).
Yes there are cultural and religious barriers in the use of organic waste as biogas feeds (e.g. use of human waste is not preferred by majority rural people). However, these barriers should not be the main reasons for not using biogas considering the acute storage of firewood and LPG and their rising price.
If you talk about making Biogas competitive with LPG, then government should give subsidies to establish small or medium scale Biogas bottling plants, rather than just promoting Biogas plants for single house hold.
Even to get the licenses required for bottling biogas is itself a tough task.
Though MNRE had launched some pilot projects in this field, but nothing concrete came out of it, and now no more subsidy they are offering specifically for Compressed Biogas plants.
