Spongy bone, also known as callousness bone or trabecular bone, is a very porous type of bone found in animals.
Cortical bone is the dense outer surface of bone that forms a protective layer around the internal cavity. This type of bone also known as compact bone makes up nearly 80% of skeletal mass and is imperative to body structure and weight bearing because of its high resistance to bending and torsion.
The spongy bone or the trabecular bone or the cancelous bone is less dense and acts as a reserve for many of the minerals and collagen fibres needed to form cortical bone or thick bone. According to the Wolf's law, bone undergoes, modeling and remodeling depending on the force acting on it. Depending on the demand, the bone needs to model and remodel. For this modeling and remodeling, it needs warehouse of materials to form the cortical bone. The spongy bone acts as a reserve of the building materials for building the bone.
Bone marrow in the Trabecular bone serves to build minerals and fibres whenever required. Differentiation of stem cells can happen as and when there is a demand.
