For example, the issue of regional cooperation in the Western Balkan region is a discussions topic that has been the subject of some examinations. The region continues to face numerous challenges: creation of the Development Strategies and to be strongly encouraged to pursue export-promotion and seeks to create growth and jobs , positioning within Europe and beyond.... However, The Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA) 2006 hasn't been shown as the driving benchmark to enhance the process of economic transition and economic growth of the region. So my question is why some transition countries prefer to be more export oriented to EU countries rather within the same geographical region.

It can be political reasons, but I guess that to have stable market access to the EU means to have access to a rather well-to-do consumer class. This helps to stabalize exports and, depending on the products, also prices.
From the perspectibe of the countries in transition the need to earn foreign exchange plays also a role. Here one can observe that prices are often low to remain competative. This does not mean that here the EU is the only trading partner, but for East European countries the EU is close and some of the countries even wish to become a EU member sooner or later. Trade thuis also help to create structures that play politically important roles in the future
