Most of the cathode slurries formulations for Li-ion batteries are based on NMP-soluble PVDF.
Few of the reasons to use PVDF is its chemical inertness and electrochemical stability. I guess, also the price. I wonder, why one cannot use PTFE, for example?
PVDF is one of the most used for cathode of lithium ion batteries because of its superior electrochemical and thermal stability and good adhesion between the current collectors and electrode films. ( PVDF Binder for Li-ion Battery Electrodes).
In addition, for the cathode side, PVDF is suitable. However, for the anode side, PAA or CMC may be better due to its high adhesive properties.

“Good binder” is s very non-specific, general statement. I know that it is an easy way to ask someone professional instead of going through the enumerous papers looking for the specific (scientific) data, which would exain the choice of PVDF over some other binders (let’s say, adhesion to certain surfaces, certain functional groups, certain materials; solubility issue; electrochemical stability at certain potential; chemical stability in certain electrolytes; etc).
