Coupling of surface plasmons directly by incident light is not possible. We have to use some phase matching technics for the coupling to occur. But in the case of spherical nanoparticles we can directly couple LSPR with incident light.
Why are you saying that a surface plasmon cannot be directly excited (that is coupled) by an ingoing light beam, of course of given wavelength?
