All the data are same accept the material properties are different. But the result show the glass composite has higher vonmises stress than carbon composite. Is it possible?Because carbon has the higher mechanical properties than carbon.It is confusing me.Thanks for help.
High strength carbon fibre has a tensile strength f only 2.5 GPa in the freshly processed form. Fresh glass fibre processed through melt spinneret forming will have a tensile strength of 3.5 GPa which comes down with hygrothermal attack or fibre to fibre rubbing in handling. So will be their von mises stresses in the composite form for the same vol. fraction. What you say is possible in the dry domain. Besides the compressive strengths are comparable though carbon has the edge. The shear component is more in carbon fibre. So, my final verdict is that freshly made composites with dry data will get you a higher von mises stress for G/E than C/E due to the large difference in the tensile data.
If you are talking about a numerical simulation, stresses are pointwise quantities, because of the heterogeneity of your composites, at certain point glass composites could be higher than carbon composites, or even the max could be higher. If you applied the same load, then the integral of the stresses should be equal.
