As a former (permanent ! ) Medical Student, and also as a Member of a Medical Faculty, may I ask you, what made you ask this question ?
I'm interested.
My personal opinion, regarding the highly selective system that we have in my Country for access to entry in public Universities, your question would find an easy answer in the results of our Numerus Clausus system, if you admit that it works correctly, or that it is not subject to bias...
Also, the fact that Medical students should have strong cultural and humanistic background to help them cope with the endeavour of a highly difficult course, would or should answer your question.
I might be more interested in discussing the background of the frequent exceptions to the rule (or myth) than you propose with your question.
Where does the system fail so very often? What can we do to help solve those problems?
Is there a better system for selection ? should we at all select, or trust on "natural selection" ???
