As i searched my reviews but i could not find any article using whole lignocellulosic material form film making, either cellulose or lignin is extracted and films are made mainly cellulose based fims, can be make films by using whole coconut shell powder
The definition of a cellulosic film must first be established. A film is typically a very thin, uniform, and evenly distributed 2D matrix that is extruded, cast, or spun. In order to develop a film, the feedstock will need to be processed in a specific way. Whole lignocellulose is used to make paper-like products (non-wovens) because the fibers are quite large and interweave unless the lignocellulose is dissolved or processed in a similar manner. Films are generally homogeneously reintegrated/polymeric materials at the meso/nanoscale. Thus, using coconut shell powder will not easily form a film without additional processing (dissolution or polymerization for example, followed by extrusion or other film forming technique).
I agree with the previous answer. A pre-processing of raw lignocellulosic materials is essential. Can we reinforce coconut shell powder into polymer matrix like PE, PP or PVA to form composites and increase their properties
In any packaging material, the first property of concern is the water solubility and the gases permeability. Generally, cellulose based films are water soluble, the addition of lignin may help in improving the mechanical properties but cannot fully solve this solubility problem. Now using coconut shell powder will introduce lignin to the cellulose cluster, but it needs pre-processing as mentioned in the previous answers. I don't know if you are planning to use the coconut shell powder as an additive or as your main material in your film, but I recommend to try using it as an additive in different quantities and then you will know how to deal with it.
There is paper regarding addition of coconut shell powder which is treated with NaOH which remove hemecellulose and added in PVA as reinforcing material.
My question is weather using cellulose or nanocellulose as reinforcing material would be good?
