Why is the letter "Q" used to designate cardiac output? Where does the letter "Q" originally come from?

Before you get upset by this strange question: I am NOT a cardiologist, just a simple gynecologist!

I guess it is coming from volumetric flow rate (denoted by Q, volume/time), as cardiac output is essentially the volumetric flow rate of the circulatory system.
