Serious loss to the Science of Statistics! What are the statistical associations around the world doing about this? What are the departments of statistics around the world doing about this?
All those new technologies (Data analytics, Big Data, Data Science…) are based on statistics and research in those areas requires extensive knowledge in the statistics. In my opinion, the difference is that those new areas are more application oriented (applied research). Also, development of new computing technologies enables us to carry out experiments that we could not perform before. For example, MapReduce allows us to use large number of computing nodes to perform calculation. Due to technology development (sensors, mobile devices, social media, distributed databases), we are now able to collect and store more data. Big Data analytics is still based on statistics, it just uses new approaches to execute computations over large, faster and more diverse sets.
I switched away from control charts as my research arena, but not away from statistics! I am enjoying the statistical analysis of spatial data sets, and this can sometimes include very large data sets with over 14 billion rows of data. This is still part of being a statistician. There will be topics-contributed session at the JSM 2015 in which five presentations will be on same cancer data that was analyzed with different methodologies, but in the end, it is all statistics.
