Why is problem solving seemingly the overriding activity of contemporary mathematics research? The landscape of the field, in my opinion, could change for the better if there were much activity centered around developing unknown and new structures with the potential of revealing the vastness of the field. I feel it might be worthwhile putting aside problem solving, which in most cases appears to be a narrow activity, and rather attempting to understand a broad structure to a level that subsumes a problem of interest.
