Assuming an animal dies while carrying out an experiment, could it be as a result of toxicity of methanol used in extraction or the extract?
Why is methanol used?
- Polarity is good to extract a wide range of compounds from non-polar to water soluble
- May be less expensive since it isn't taxed
As for the question of the animals, it could be one or the other or both. What is the concentration of methanol? Extract?
@Jack silver, 70% methanol will be used to extract 250g of each plant part.
I suppose the extract will be dried of solvent ad re-suspended in something more amenable to biology?
Methanol is used during extraction of herbs in industry. There is EU guideline for residual solvent and according to that acceptable limit in Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical product is 3000ppm. Spray dried product normally have very less residual solvent than above imit hence I do not think dry extract made from Methanol have any toxicity unless and untill they have more residual solvent than the EU norms
