Every Master's/ PhD thesis in the library is hardly referred by 10 members, and that too for getting an idea to how to write their own thesis. One would have a minimum of 200 research articles on his/her collection to plan a research idea and to successfully complete their research, than have reference to hard or soft thesis copies. The research article published by the student will have crisp and necessary information on the topic. Then why should he/she elaborate on the topic in the form of a thesis? Or are we forced to follow the old methodology of writing thesis, where once the access to online e - journal was limited? Is it possible or necessary to change this system, so that every students can finish their degree earlier. Or it is a training system to make them write scientific books later in their life?
Your are absolutely right about the referrals; but a PhD dissertation provides a valid evidential basis for the PhD candidate because it reveals his/her adroitness in the field s/he has studied. Although doing a PhD is an extremely challenging work, it is still regarded as a useful source for intellectual stimulation. And mind you, many love the challenge because such challenges are an inherent part of human nature.
In addition to demonstrating your skills and acumen as a researcher, a thesis or dissertation is an immensely valuable way to improve your knowledge base. Much of your future success depends in large part on a deep and extensive base of knowledge in your area of study. Knowing the evidence base, prominent theories, the unanswered questions, and the controversies in your area helps you pose better research questions, better evaluate research, and puts you in a stronger position to establish a line of research that pushes the field forward. Although arduous, one of the primary benefits of doing a thesis or dissertation is the development of your knowledge that will drive your future success.

But usually Thesis is meant for sharing one's knowledge for the benefit of the future readers (and researchers of the particular field), and I wish it's highly referred.
