In fact, gold was found to be stable and less prone to oxygen poisoning during oxidation reaction. Please refer this paper attached, especially, page 35 - first paragraph. I really want to know the chemistry behind why gold (Au), as an oxidation catalyst, is more stable than Pt and Pd, Pt being the noblest metal.

Au is the relativistic atom. No single acid can dissolve it excepting selenic acid. It has high electronegativity, high ionization energy and electronegativity. In consequence it not only have tendency to be present in noble state but can also form auride ion. This facts I think will help to understand that Au has oxidizing ability and can function as catalyst showing that property.

Au functions as catalyst is revealed from the attached paper but reason of catalytic behavior of Au is not clear.
The attached paper explains it well why Au is having relativistic effect. From article attached, it seems that first ionization plays important role in making it resistant to oxidation compared to Pd, Pt or Ag. Can anyone elaborate why Au has emerged as a better catalyst than Pd, Pt or Ag?
