In surface plasmon on the nanoparticles, the density of photons is much higher than in free space. I saw an articles saying that it is because the electrons which are in high density couple into the original photon states. I am wondering what really happens in the "coupling interaction".
And does that also mean the light dissipates into heat in the high density of electrons?

Simply because the group velocity of light in meta-materials is reduced. More coupling with electrons reduce group velocity. You have still the same power flux (which is conserved), but higher energy density.
