Why is current measured in mA/um at nanoscale?

In nanoscale devices why the current is measured in mili-Amperes/(micro-meter), why not simply mili-amperes.?

It is because, this current is given for two dimensional device(of area A) with z-dimension equal to 1um. Assume, current is given as 1mA/um. it means that this current is given for a device of A(Area)x1um. Now suppose you made a device with dimension of A(Area) x 5um, then current for this device will be equal to 5mA.
