I have a rather simple geometry consisting of a single lap joint of two sheets, to which I added some pins to increase the strength to fracture.
I initially made the parts in Solidworks and them exported them in a step file.
The problem now is that, every time I try to partition the parts to make them meshable, Abaqus takes hours to do so, or it just closes after some time.
Has anyone encountered similar problems?
I dont know if it is related to my geometry, the type of export file from solidworks, abaqus, etc...

The model that you described apparently is quite simple and should not take a long time to be partitioned and meshed (adding one picture to your question may help to answer better). I had some suggestions that might speed up your modelling:
- If you can, model the geometry directly in the Abaqus using its sketch and CAD tools. It would be more efficient.
- If you can not, prepare your model in CATIA and import with CATIA V5. I think Abaqus is more compatible with CATIA compare to SolidWorks.
- Import only two surfaces and then mesh them with shell elements rather than solid elements. It will reduce the computational cost.
- If the pins are significantly stiffer than the plates and you don’t need to compute their deformation, make them Analytical Rigid. It would be easier and more efficient in the next step when you want to solve the contact problem.
