Can anybody help me to explain why I got oil product when I synthesized chalcone from 1-acetyl naphthalene and 3-fluorobenzaldehyde with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution as catalyst; on the other side I got solid product by using sodium hydroxide dissolved in methanol?
Actually, the physical state is not good indication to the product , in both case you have check by TLC to get information about the number and type of products and match with the reactants ( TLC ).at that time you will be sure about the products and the remained reactants.some times, in case of oily or gummy, there may be more than one isomer. In all cases the best and fast indication is TLC. Good Luck
it is possible that the one oily product is much impure than the one solid. I aggree to perform some analysis on TLC.
Concentration of hydroxide and temperature may also affect this reaction. We can't rule out the possibility of cannizaro's at high concentration of hydroxide with 3-fluorobenzaldehyde and aldol with acetylnaphthalene even at low concentration of hydroxide. I would suggest to try considerably weak base for this conversion.
As per above reply, ultimately TLC of reaction mass will clear the picture.

in order to avoid cannizaro,s reactin.In all cases TLC is the best test , it tells every thing Bout the products and the disaperance of the stating materials.
