The cost of publishing in Open Access journal varies from a few hundred (e.g. RSC Advances) to a few thousand USD (Nat. Commun.). It is understood that the assisting people/employees (not the reviewers) need to be paid for their service.

However, it is not understood why the reputed journals charge such a high amount.

In this situation, many good works from small universities with lack of funding cannot even think of publishing in such journals. This is something really to be worried.

Is earning money the main goal of publishers?

What if the reviewers start asking for money for the time and knowledge they spend for thorough reviewing?

Is there a way to waive off the money for open access publishing? If so, in what conditions? (**Invited articles are not charged)
