Why greengram is more preferred over rice/rapeseed to perform phytotoxicity test?

various research article are based on assessment of phytotoxicity test of particular soil input which are usually performed on green gram? Is there any specific reason or its because easy of measuring radical length? Is it necessary to perform phytotoxicity test on the same seed used for field application?
