You are right about the effects but we are in search for a mechanism respecting as much as possible regular rolling processing. Continuous production methods are just loved by engineers.
Plate rolling involves (i) width making, (ii) rough rolling and (iii) finish rolling. Each of these steps have different purpose and have to be carried out as per requirement. Width making to start with is simpler in nature and requirement wherein you have to achieve desired width of the plate before actual rough and finish rolling commences. The total reduction during width passes are limited and depends upon slab width and plate width. You may also note that cross rolling (90 deg) rotation is done during width making passes. This is not possible during roughing and finishing passes due to limitation in roller table width.
