i am not sure if i understand your question correctly. Actually, there are tens or maybe hundreds of research papers published yearly on training/tuning machine learning models using nature inspired algorithms.

Can you please make your question a bit more clear?

Are you asking why machine learning algorithms, like reinforcement learning, have been getting more popularity than heuristics?

Or, the heuristics aided machine learning methods, such as GA based feature extraction for ANN?

If you just started studying Machine Learning as a field not as a topic of research, then I would suggest to start reading the basics behind those models before the training algorithms. Even ANFIS, you should have a good background on ANN, Fuzzy logic, Linear Models ... etc, then you can start reading about these advanced models.
