Another to add: If you look at early periods of Putin's rule you will find commentators referring to 'gangster rule'-the oligarchs and Putin. An economic/gangster cabal intending not just to rule, but fleece the country. Putin appropriated companies from their owners, who had built them up from scratch, and gave them to a similarly minded cabal. Their main purpose seems to have been money laundering.
(You can challenge me on this, but a model for Putin has been America and particular perceptions of it. An elite group, personified by Trump, who make the rules up as they go along. Putin's military adventures have a like base, even if misunderstood.)

Why does propaganda succeed?
Should we be informed to be totally uninformed? Perhaps it is convenient to make a stop along the way to reflect well on this. I consider that in our days the "covert propaganda" or attempt of "political literacy" obeys "roughly" to new standards of knowledge of a History or Stories that aspire to remain true forever. The successful cascades of participatory propaganda can deal with "fake news" at ease, so that all "trade" to send powerful political, social, economic, etc. signals. They can only help shape a colossal public perception through fake or strategically orchestrated bombings. There are always recipients who fall into the trap without realizing it!

Your suggestion is certainly welcome but taking it further this is also about the nature of reality and how we access it.
I have found on here that those who access Putin's narrative are indifferent to consequences. So what if children are blown up? For example. They see war as at best or worst a chess game and somehow conceive themselves as taking the clever, even enlightened, viewpoint. They seem to feel that blame is equalised at every turn. While this provides decent analysis, we are not at an analysing stage but in a point where cities are flattened and men, women and children are being killed by a conscienceless military force sent in to systematically destroy.

In authoritarian countries with just one dominant ideology practically speaking all communication channels are subjected to a strict all-embracing centralized censorship leading to harsh consequences in cases of violations of their requirements. It makes no sense to discuss the value and reliability of such information, which isn't competitive in nature to begin with. It's just a complete brainwash propaganda from cradle to grave.

It succeeds due to exaggeration of successes, distortion of the actual state of things and situations. All of that used to be amplified many times through multiple channels of propaganda, which magnifies its negative effect. Nevertheless, propaganda's impact is getting neutralized by competing mass media channels and periodically reelected administrations and legislators. That leaves the voters a room for thinking and a freedom of choice.

Your comment tells me that most likely you have never lived in a totalitarian authoritarian country that keeps tight control on what people listen, watch, and read. Moreover, the ones who have such autonomously acquired information get often severely punished as well as some other ones who disseminate such information. People, grown up and living many decades in such environment, loose in masses even interest in getting non officially recognized information sources. One of the cruelest psychological tortures in the former SU were weekly official meetings (so called political information meetings), where everyone ought to say how s/he understands official political allegations and documents in newspapers, radio, and TV. It was nothing short of identification for the purpose of farther persecution, or various restriction in professional promotions of dissidents.
This is not reproach - good for you, if you never been exposed to that. I just show that your assumption is not realistic for the vast majority of people living in such environments.
Really, I was attempting to show the complexity of reaction even in totalitarian societies and how thereby new narratives can be eventually formed. I hate to believe (yes I have never lived for long in such societies but elements of totalitarianism exist in all societies. Power can be given to certain groups in any society for the assumed betterment of citizens.) that there is no way out.
The Russian believers in Putin belong to the older generation, not those who grew used to other societies. The window is always left open at some point and somewhere. Even under Stalin, you had brilliant minds who fastened onto the light. One gleam, and a whole castle crumbles. Or can do.
My deepest concern with Putin is his criminal nature, not just his authoritarianism. Were the Ukrainians and Abramovich poisoned at the recent peace negotiations-probably? Putin's style, surely? If Volodymyr Zelenskyy agrees to the terms he has put forward, he is inviting further Russian incursions but also his own fairly imminent assassination.
While US and Nato stand by, Putin chuckles.
You seem also not to fully understand the creation of realities within liberal societies, which is based on groups and interests and not centralised authorities, or state ones. It is neatly parcelled out.
There is another Putin agent doing the rounds, Sergey Viktorovich Pushkin. According to him NATO sent troops to Russia's borders to invade it and placed Nuclear weapons there therefore Russia had no choice but to invade Ukraine. Russia's missiles are not flattening Ukraine's cities and killing its people.
There is a difference between holding opposing opinions and inserting disinformation. So far, many of these agents who are simply regurgitating Putin's views, appear to have been on the site for several months at least but did not engage much with it. Most are retired, but this gentleman is younger. Or appears to be.
