Try the adsorption experiment changing Ca-alginate to magnesium alginate or to Ca-Mg alginate in different Ca/Mg ratios. (Mg alginate is soluble in water (sol), Ca alginate is a precipitate (gel).) (Or with Ca-Mg salts of polygalacturonic acid from pectin.)
