Some examples are crotonaldehyde changes color when exposed to light or air and azobenzene changes color when exposed to light. I am wondering if the color change indicates a change in the molecule to not be identified as the original molecule (ie not identified in GC or MS as the original molecule)?

Because the molecule is oxidizing in air. Crotonaldehyde to Crotonoic Acid (a COOH organic acid). You can try covering with Helium gas or just let it oxidize.

Hi,
Color change in presence of light or air is may be leads to oxido-reductive mechanisms and it may convert original form of compound. And depends on compound to be retain in GC-MS analysis.
