I've synthesized a MOF (Metal-Organic Framework, a crystalline particle), and I wanted to see what effects sonication has on its structure. I expected it to lose its crystalline properties, but it didn't, and I saw a shift on the X-Ray peaks: some of them were more intense, and others shifted to the right. What could be the reason behind these changes?
I think that the effect of the sonication was low, so the structure of the crystal was just slightly modified, but there was no amorphization. You can try to sonicate your sample for more time or with higher intensity.
Hi Daniel Ruiz, thanks for sharing this interesting question. I agree with Eszter Kása, maybe only the distortion of lattice arrangement in the structure.
From personal experience, sonification which is a form of physical agitation can reduce crystallinity in certain samples and this can be evident in shifts in XRD peaks before and after sonification.

The contributions of Eszter Kása's are more than enough to inform the discussion. In my opinion, bath sonication alters the edges of MOF, affecting the crystallinity and shape of the framework. This is reflected in XRD intensity or value of 2ϴ(minor miller indices planes). There is another possibility, if you record XRD without proper washing, there are also some impurity present which also alters the crystallinity of MOFs.
