One sometimes reads in a mathematical/statistical proof that a certain assumption can be made ‘without loss of generality’ (WLOG). In other words, it is claimed that considering what first appears only a special case does nevertheless suffice to prove the general result.
Mathematics thrives on the generality of its theories. To be able to discuss some results we may use particular cases just for clarification. For example one may use the context of discrete variables to discuss a result which applies to both discrete and continuous variables. We may therefore use WLOG in this case.
why must we have to choose from this or that when we have the 'theory of everything ...'
Its a necessity because the generality theory pivots all mathematical/statistical sciences.
