One point is that if the learner does the homework by himself/herself, then it gives the teacher feedback in what the learner really understands. Unfortunately, parents often help and the result is that the work in not necessarily the child's. There are also social and psychological benefits in assigning homework and especially group projects. The learners learn the value and importance of work. This is something that is important for character development and is essential in adults who have to enter the working world. Group work means that the learners learn the value of cooperation and collaboration, essential to teamwork, which, again, is essential to those entering the working world.

the advent of internet technology has brought about limitless possibilities for research among students, and yes, blatant Copy and Pasting of materials (in toto!) from the internet and making it their own. So, how do you think we can ensure that we accomplish the real objectives of assigning homeworks to students?

According to my experience as an English Teacher in Colombia, the benefits and advantages that students have when they have to do homeworks, are related to the knowledge and research. As it is known, my country is not a bilingual country and a lot of students do not have basic knowledge about English. Therefore, the fact of doing homeworks at home, help them gain and enrich their knowledge. On the other hand, it is relevant that every student,whether pretends to learn, must research about different topics not only related to English language and its theorical part but also with different topics focused on the reality in the world, above all, the context and the environment in the education and it will become true when the students use ICT's and there is a feedback by the teacher.

The benefits of assignment to students are as follows;

• it reinforces concept learnt in class.
• motivates students to explore more.
• helps to complete syllabus on schedule.
• improves students performance.
• provide feedback to the teacher about the depth of students' assimilation.
• provide basis for remedial work.

Assignment or homework glues the learner to his or her books even after school.So there is the likelihood that the learner will reflect on all that was taught in school and this will enhance retention of knowledge

The homeworks are a part from learning process.

It helps students to learn on their own and also gain more understanding about a course subject.

As homework is one type of feedback and so is a test, and because we all grow via appropriate feedback, I believe that it is time flip the idea from "teach to test" into "test to teach"

It is an excellent question that Dr. Z. A. Al-Hemyari presents and I value as very important, the comments of colleagues who answered before me, but I prefer to quote with humility what follows:

There is a Cuban thinker and teacher named Felix Varela (1788-1853) who summarized the problem of cognitive independence of students with a memorable phrase:

To answer your question from a different perspective....

During my time in the secondary school education system in the UK the discussion was not about what the benefits are, rather it is about how to motivate the students to complete the homework in the first place. It is the same old story, the students who do not do the homework are the students who would benefit the most.

My experience at University is the same. The most committed students complete the homework or out of lesson work and, typically, the students I want to do the homework do not.

Thus, the question should be how do we motivate or encourage students engage with out of lesson learning.

If we teachers think that a lecture or narrative in a classroom should be fully enough for student learning, we are in for big disappointments. Robert Mager once wrote "If telling is teaching, we would all be so smart that we could hardly stand it" Constructive homework assignments or any work with active reflection in other parts of a learners life are necessary for sustainable learning. The next more crucial question is WHAT to learn in the information society, the curricular question. That is a tough one.
