The benefits associated with conference attendance evolved, in my view, as one travels along the career trajectory in higher education. I began attending conferences in earnest as a doctoral student in 2005 in order to acculturate myself to my new profession and discipline. In that process I was able to learn about the subcultures and develop a small network of people like myself - nontraditionally-aged doctoral students.
One of the more important aspects associated with conference attendance was learning the process of academic hiring in the U.S.
When I was fortunate enough to get my first academic position, my knowledge of the conferences, experience with submitting proposals for presentation, and even the few people that had become part of my conference network were quite valuable in helping me begin a record of scholarship.
I discovered that the smaller conferences were excellent opportunities to build a stronger professional network, and that these connections were instrumental in opening up national service opportunities.
