I have been thinking about why we use social networking tools for research from the point of view of the motivation of the researcher. In other words to answer the What, Why and How questions. I have summarised my ideas in this document. I would welcome any suggestions or refinements.

Hi Martin, Thank you for this. The point I was getting at is not so much about tools, but it is good to know what is out there, it's how do you explain to a student or a researchers just starting out why they might use them.
Hi Arjun, I agree that social media is changing the way we communicate and work. I have a feeling that this has long been embedded in the areas of science and technology where after all the internet originates. I think it is spreading to social science and humanities as well. I like the example of the un-conference as something traditional that has been transformed by "social media" thinking.
I also think there is a great deal of "additionality" that can be gained from thinking about our use of social media as a new skill that can be used in better or worse ways. That might also change our way of thinking and doing things in other areas. What I notice about RG is not the social media aspect, which can be achieved elsewhere, but the international nature of the conversations. That to me is a real game changer or KPI for RG. BW Matt.

Social media is not just marketing for academic work. Social media platforms can inform every step of the research process: helping faculty get a pulse on movement in their industry, providing feedback during research and then assisting in the promotion of the published work. We use networks to better understand which issues are important to various stakeholders, to get feedback on our work, a faster and in more ways more effective form of peer review, and to meet other academics and other who are interested in our work,
Why not? Its just a way of collecting data, be it social media or google form or a paper survey.
Well....... In many cases we don't have access to the journals in which the work related to our area of interest is got published. Being students we don't have much to pay to theses journals and then get the data. So its a good option to directly contact the researcher with the help of these social networking sites and ask him to provide the data which the researchers mostly do generously. So ..... :) y not this
