Although there are lot of herbal phytoceuticals proving as anticancer in Vivo as well as in Vitro. But once these compounds are put to clinical trials they miserably fail.
Ayurveda the ancient health care science believe in synergistic action more rather than individual phyto chemical. There are different dosage forms described in Ayurveda like Decoction in which water soluble actives are present, medicated Ghee or Oil both water and fat soluble actives are present, Asava and Arishta in which Water and Alcohol soluble actives are present. Mostly poly ingredients practices are advised in Ayurveda.
The answers of A. Bojko and Alemu are more suitable.
Low bioavailability. It is almost impossible to asses in the human body the concentration that worked in vitro. Then phytohemicals act as a mixture of different compounds (curcumin, quercetin), so it is difficult to say which of curcuminoids is doing what.
Thank you Bojko, your last line is basically the fact.
I am from the one of the Traditional System of Medicine which here in India is know as Unani System of Medicine. Our concept is use of whole part of herb not bio-molecule. It is only because may be some molecules which we throw away after extraction may have some kind of catalyst or bio-enhancing or antidote action. In this way we should encourage the use of whole herb not phytoceuticals as these extracted compounds do not guarantee safety......
I agree with the points mentioned above. When different compounds are administered in combination, such as compounds present in herbal extracts, they may exert either synergistic, additive or antagonstic effects. When a specific class of compounds is purified and used alone, it may lose its activity. I think that is why most of the compounds purified from extracts lose its pharmacological activity/or exert reduced activity compared with the crude extract.
