Top journals are known for slower response time, however the common held belief that researchers avoid them because they take longer to publish in,seems as an excuse to direct researchers to quicker publication journals. But is this truly why researchers steer away from them?
Thanks for an interesting question. Most of the researchers I work with avoid the top journal because they feel intimidated by the journal's reputation and the highly publicised rejection rates. I suspect another factor is that top journals tend to focus on large studies.
I tend to encourage the researchers I work with to target the journals that best reach their intended audience.
Top journals are frequently faster in rejection of manuscripts for publishing; most (>50-90%) submissions are rejected fast, within two weeks, for peer review; slower response times are therefore not the reason for me or my students to refrain from submissions to top journals; we have other reasons. Thank you Doctors, I am actually interested because I believe the mechanisms of publication need to get changed. The Impact factor is a metric that is causing a lot of researchers to worry about their research impact and reach. Although, the main purpose of publishing is originally different. Thank You David and Hein for insightful answers.
A further recent observation. Twice I resubmitted my rejected manuscript successfully to a higher ranking journal; our first submissions had been to specialized journals (bear; ibis); in resubmission we targeted journals with a broader scope.
