In the current times we are living, the importance of the metrics in assessing researchers is increasing and metrics became detrimental to the researchers success in academia. However these metrics can be misleading, mutual (reciprocated)  citations for example increase your scoring and seems widely used, but is it ethical? and does it lead to a stronger research?
