I would like to know why metals exhibit a predefined crystal structure. In other words, why Copper is in form of FCC or Fe is a BCC metal and so on.

I know that these structures are formed to maintain the equilibrium atomic spacing, but how is it that the "equilibrium atomic spacing" is achieved when a special structure (FCC, BCC and etc) is formed?
