Why do I need cycloheximide or/and DTT in the sucrose gradient for polysome profiling?

I want to do a polysome profiling via a sucrose gradient. In almost every protocol I found cycloheximide and/or DTT was either added to the sucrose gradient or to the tissue while homogenization. Can someone explain why these two compounds are needed in this context?
