Kaleta et al 2013 show that the biosynthetic cost for many amino acids in E. coli is negative (ATP is produced when glucose is converted to many AA's). When amino acids necessary for E. coli proteome are synthesised from glucose ATP is produced rather than consumed. Therefore, when cells are supplemented with amino acids they should need more energy compared to the situation on glucose.
