Do the carbothiamide Schiff base derivatives have antibacterial activity when not complexed with Ni? Gram negative bacteria can be killed by chelation of surface Mg2+ by EDTA, which disrupts the outer membrane, and the growth of intracellular bacterial pathogens can be inhibited by deprivation of essential metals.

Do these compounds have any effect on mammalian cells in culture?
