I suppose that there exists a rational answer to the above question, but I do not know it. The word "football" used to be the name of the game played with *foot* and *ball*; the "American football" is played in a slightly different way. It is important to clarify the issue about "football", because to improve the world, we should first learn what the words actually mean. If we solve the question of "football", we could gradually make clear what "democracy", "freedom", "human rights" and similar things actually mean.
I am always baffled by that same question, although in Chinese, we correct the confusion by calling the game '橄榄🏈 球‘ 。。。
Susan, thank you for your Chinese word/name for football. I am always impressed when I see such Chinese words. It is very beautiful, but it seems to me that I would not be able to learn to write Chinese; it looks very demanding (complex) to me.
