I did GC-MS analysis of Euphorbia hexan extracts. sesquiterpens and triterpens appeared, but diterpens didn't appear. I wonder about the reason of that.
Some doterpenes do appear. But not commonly in essential oils as most are to heavy to evaporate in hydrodistillation. But sometimes you do get them in essential oils but you cannot detect them if the GCMS operating conditions are not hot enough for long enough. It is good to hold the GC oven at 280deg C for 20-30 mins after ramp. If you also use solvent extract from leaf injection, provided that the polar head space is low you can see diterpenes that are slightly too heavy to be in essential oils but still light enough to be gas at 280deg C.
