I am currently working with some old papers, mostly from Physical Review. I noticed that in those old publications (1960s to 1970s) citations were given as footnotes, while in most more recent publications citations are listed at the end of the article in a single list.

Was there any reason for this change of style?

Personally I strongly prefer the footnote citations. While reading those old pucliations, I quickly look to the bottom of the page, usually notice from author/year that it is a paper I already know, and can keep reading without interruption.

With end-note style citations I need to switch to the end of the article to look this up. This is slightly inconvenient when working with a printed copy ("finger-bookmark") and becomes quite jarring when reading on a digital device, especially when the PDF does not contain hyperlinks. However, so far I haven't experienced a case where this style felt superior to footnote citations.
