Often when viewing time we see simply an immediate need. eg. Food. Hence, we focus on the immediate season with little thought of the next. With this example of season to season we do not consider how planting the same basic crops over and over in the long term is of detriment to the very soils needed. To fix said shortsightedness we seek quick fixes or leave it to the future generations to fix it

I can understand that, when you direct survival (physically or economically) is at stake, you will choose for the short term solutions.
Only when you have a certain buffer (and a certain knowledge/insight about how things might work out at the long run), you may be inclined or convinced to choose for the long term approach.
