It is becoming more and more clear that males are at a greater risk of developing infections with COVID-19 and are at a greater risk of morbidity and mortality.
Women and men are almost equal when it comes to contamination. However, the coronavirus kills more men than women. Males make up about 63.8%. This difference could be explained by sociological factors. In China, men smoke more. At the global level, smoking prevalence remains much higher in men than in women. One in three men is a daily or occasional smoker, compared to only one in 16 women (prevalence of 6%). This could also be explained by biologic factors; women develop better immune responses to the coronavirus. The epidemics of Sras and Mers had moreover killed more men than women who, in general, are more resistant to the virus.
Women have a stronger immune system, thanks to their sex hormones which play a role in immunity. But two researchers from the University of London put forward a new explanation: women are more interesting as hosts for infectious agents because they can pass infections during pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding. There would, therefore, be an evolutionary pressure that favors more virulent viruses in men than women.
In the most tragic periods in history, it is also thanks to the physiological differences that women have lived longer.
ACE2 is a single-pass type I membrane protein that anchors the enzyme to the surface of cells in lungs and other tissues. It serves as main entry point into cells for some coronaviruses.(source Wikipedia)
Thanks for entering the discussion and certain smoking is a factor for
endothelial function and function of epithelial cells - Yes, ACE2 serves as a receptor for COVID-19 and as pointed out this may be different in females as compared to males.
Let us look at the prevention tips for COVID-19 and who is more likely to disregard the measures put in place. 1. Meetings: Who has more meetings? Men. All sorts of meetings. Hand washing: men are more likely to disregard this measure too. They feel they are tougher and more daring? Their chauvinism puts them at risk more Who has more worries between the man and the woman? The man. So he is more stressed up. His immune system is more fragile than the woman's. So, why not? He is at risk for a higher morbidity and mortality.
I think I may have foudn a good answer or at least shed some important in regards to the HPA axis dysfunction due to stress of infection and the response by males as compared to females. in patients with MetS and T2DM the HPA is known to already have a dysfunction HPA axis.
