I am studying plasmonic apertures and rods and came across the advice that magnetic dipoles are usually dark modes. I understand that electric quadropoles are usually dark modes due to opposing field directions (correct me if this is not always the case, I assume perhaps there could be bright quadrapoles as well). Perhaps the assumption that magnetic dipoles are dark modes is only applicable to apertures, or am I wrong in thinking as such as well?
Magnetic dipole and elctric quadrupole modes have the same relation to the selection rules. Its may be recordable if the electric dipole (E1) modes (as more intense) are forbidden. In such a situation the magnetic dipole (M1) and electric quadrupole (E2) modes must be allowed.

Would you please explain more by giving an example about what does it mean by 'no phase difference' and 'how the symmetry is cancelling out in far field'?
I am trying to study dark mode but could not understand how they are different from dipole mode.
As we incidnet light on nanostructure, at resonance frequency they resonante and emit light. thats all I have undrestood till now. I would be very thankful to you if you plaese make my concepts clear in simple language.
