I have done degradation of MB dye using rare earth doped ZnO and undoped ZnO but BET results are showing only significant amount of changes in pore diameter only . The pore volume and surface area are not showing great amount of change although the photocatalytic degradation of MB dye shows great enhancement in results. Why is it so?
I am sure that a bunch of active researchers will jump in and shed more light on different possible scenario. I will highlight one of those.
I assume that the RE doped ZnO showed better photocatalytic degradation of MB than its undoped counterpart in spite of having similar surface area. I ignore the pore size difference. The RE doping could have introduced band gap states or decreased the band gap of ZnO that helped harvest longer wavelength photons and increased the photo activity. You need more data such as UV-Vis spectroscopy to determine the band gap modification, and material characterization results to understand the photo catalytic activity.
