It looks like University of Botswana, Main campus (in Gaborone) has hard copies of the reports, but perhaps not the maps. Are you really prepared to mail the whole lot to Okavango Research Institute (ORI) for safe keeping and use? That would be an amazing donation. If you would like the work to remain together in a secure repository I can recommend our Libarary. The documents and maps will be accessioned and added to the catalogue. These are collections of documents donated by family members, all three of these gentlemen had unique documents, reports, maps, images from their work in norther Botswana. Just wanted you to feel confident of our ability to house such documentation.

I may have met you as I went to DHV offices when starting work on the OKWA WMA management plan to see if there was a base line vegetation map for the area. That's a long time ago!!

By the way Dr. Lucas Rutina was working here at ORI for several years, he has gone to Namibia but am not sure which University. We expect him to return to a Botswana institution eventually!

From your link I conclude your library holds only Volume II (70 pp. ); for clarity sake, I have marked this Volume II in my list of Volumes in my preceding answer by bold fonts and exclamation marks.

Vol II is largely a compilation of physical features well-known at the time; the remaining volumes contain original information on vegetation, San/Basarwa and wildlife distributions at the end of the seventies, that I hope one day will be combined with the later surveys to construct the time line.

I will now explore to costs and possibilities to ship the 5 kg package to Maun.

In the context of the CARAP, I did meet Mark on social occasions in Botswana. Between 1994-2002 and 2013-15, I have been in Namibia on various long projects for MLR, MET and University of Science & Technology (Polytechnic). On the latter, I have used digitized (GIS) CARAP maps as teaching materials. Currently, I have a manuscript under review at a journal on Namibia.

I have a slightly odd question, I am trying to find out more about a plant collector from the mid-1970s. His name is only ever recorded as 'H. Hiemstra' I was wondering if you ever came across the man, or his name. I am guessing that he is Dutch and have only found one other (in Google search) he is at UvA, but a Chemist. if you have any ideas I would be most grateful.

At Santo Antao, Cabo Verde, I met a Hiemstra collecting plants in the mid 1980s; I never heard about him since then.

Thank you for thinking about my query! I have since found out that our H. Hiemstra was part of a UNDP study team here in Botswana specifically looking at the hydrology of the Okavango delta so... I have more material to continue my search with. Now I must find time to go rummage in the correspondence files in the Legacy collections of our ORI Library.

Thanks for contacting me. The map set of the report is gem as a historical record of the Kalahari. I have donated the set to the ORI in Maun where it is now accessible to you and other interested persons. My hope is that the wildlife and habitat data contained in the maps will be digitised in a GIS and used together with subsequent wildlife censuses and inventories for a landscape history of the Kalahari, relevant for wildlife conservation and tourism.

For a concrete, ambitious project (proposal), I would be delighted to support you with advice and author information as well as second copy, if working from Gaborone with maps in Maun would be a handicap. Please appreciate, the Kalahari and its issues are well-known to me as Namibian SEA officer in the current decade.
