An unconventional question, would be grateful for thoughts. As the PI of a qualitative research study that was conducted independently, together with two research assistants, I am collaborating with an institution that wishes to carry out secondary analysis of our original data. The institution claims that the head of their research team will be the PI, and I assume first author, of the published manuscript, since they are leading the secondary analysis. They were not involved in any way in the original research or implementation of the study.

My question is, what rights does the PI of the original research study and research assistants have to authorship in this case? Would I be relegated to middle author even though I conceived, led and designed the original research study? How does authorship of secondary analysis work? Any guidance gratefully appreciated. Thank you.
